I've had a variety of inspirations. Like many authors, several of my books are loosely based on my life with enhancements and straight-up inventions of places and people. The fantasy series - Reunion - started with a challenge from my husband to write for the National Novel Writing Month, aka NaNoWriMo. That challenge lead to the book, Finding Magic. From there, I created my new world, a new way for magic to work, and set the characters off on their journey to save the world.
I like character-driven writing. I call some of my books "fictional autobiographies" because that's how I write them, as if I'm telling someone's story from their perspective. Writing with a first-person narrator is challenging, because that person has to be "in the room" for every scene and chapter. But mostly, I think you have to care, as a reader, what happens to the characters. Otherwise, why turn the page?
In fantasy, I look also for strong characters, but also magic that has rules. If magic can just do anything, with no restrictions, then the author has no bounds either. I created this idea of organic vs. elemental magic, which led to other interesting dichotomies.
The first audio book will be released at the end of December 2020 - Finding Magic: The Legend of Sorcha and Aidan.
